What began as a handshake among four townships of Minnesota farmers has protected East Central Minnesota for nearly 140 years.
Founded around a farmhouse table
In the fall of 1885, a group of farmers from the townships of Spring Vale, Wyanett, Dalbo, and Maple Ridge gathered at O. Hawkins’ home in Wyanett to solve a shared problem: how to protect one another from fire and loss when no one else would.
They organized their own mutual, elected neighbors as its first directors — A.E. Nelson, A.M. Nordell, N. Engstrom, G.E. Olson, and O. Hawkins — and began signing up members that December. The very first policy was written for Erick Bruce on March 23, 1886: $373 of coverage for an annual premium of $1.89.
Nearly 140 years later, that same idea still runs the company — policyholders looking out for one another, with decisions made close to home.
